Meagan Preston, Project Manager…
PLOT TWIST! The only thing I can tell myself when things don’t go my way. All of my life I have tried to make plans for my future, whether that be for tonight’s dinner, tomorrow’s outfit, or next year’s vacations. But don’t you find it funny that just at the moment you feel like you finally have things set in stone, they change? That is the epitome of my life.
When I was growing up I knew (I mean, I REALLY knew) that I was going to be an actress. I took all the lessons. I did all the auditions. I even recited my monologue in the mirror for hours (Embarrassed? Maybe just a little). And then PLOT TWIST! After 8 years, I changed my mind. I wanted to be a golfer and a youth pastor! I planned to attend a private college after high school, play on their golf team, study the Bible, get a job at a church, and help teens. But then… PLOT TWIST! I got kicked off my high school golf team (we don’t need to go into that nightmare of a story). The point is that I was forced to re-evaluate my life once again.
That’s when my mom planted the seed of being a hair stylist. I have followed that calling for 5 years now, and I love it! This last year I was presented with another plot twist – the opportunity to be a part of the Waypoint team. I can’t tell you how thankful I am for that unexpected offer. It has been an incredible season!
As I look back on my life, there are things I have learned that help me deal with these so called “plot twists”.
Expect them! I know, I know. But I am serious! Goals and plans are great for moving us in the direction that we feel called, and we must follow that calling. I highly encourage making plans, but I also believe that everything happens for a reason. That means that if your plans change, then there is something much better out there.
Don’t be discouraged! Like I said, if your plans don’t fall into place that just means there’s something bigger and better happening. Now I’m not saying you should give up. It could just mean not yet. You could always have a turnaround and be moving towards that goal later. But nonetheless, don’t be discouraged. Keep to what you know and just keep moving forward.
Last but not least, don’t sweat it! After working so hard to become an actress and then finally realizing that I didn’t want to do it anymore, I felt SO much guilt. I kept thinking, “I have worked so hard and invested so much money and time! I can’t give up!” Sometimes the answer isn’t that you’ve given up…you’re just meant to do something else now. When I look back at that time of my life, I have zero regrets! I will treasure those memories, but the bigger plan was and IS so much better than mine. There’s no reason to feel bad for following other callings.
I think of it like this…think of your favorite movie or book. Are you picturing it? Now imagine that story without any plot twists, without any ups and downs or unexpected changes. Can you even imagine how boring that story would be? Plot twists make stories better.
In the storyline of your life, you’re going to experience situations that will test you. They might be small, like drinking sour milk right out of the carton, or huge, like being passed up on a promotion. But at the end of the day, I hope you’ll see it for everything that it is and appreciate how every single one of those plot twists was absolutely and completely WORTH IT!
