A few posts ago, I addressed the benefits of building your portfolio when you aren’t getting paid. Today I want to address a similar subject that prohibits many from diving into the creative field; the fear that you can never make a living by doing what you love.
I’m going to go ahead and let Alan Watts address this issue.
There is so much truth in this video; I hesitate to even interject my own thoughts. At this point, you may be asking…
Isn’t this too good to be true?
Maybe. The brief video does skip over some harsh realities like working a day job and still finding time to work on your personal art. True enough, but the point remains, you’ll never have a happy life with money as your end goal. If you need to wait tables for a few years while you get on your feet, no problem. Let the miserable day-job become part of your origin story. Let it shape your artistic voice and give you street cred before you break out and surprise everyone.
Here’s one more principle that carries over; don’t be afraid. A decision made in fear will always lead to destruction. When you choose love over fear, everyone wins.
